The Arts Collab has brought another program to Bir The Arts Collab has brought another program to Birmingham! Last week, Teaching Artist @cristallaraebrister will bring her mastery of the dramatic arts to her class at Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School.

Through this program, her students will explore the depths of their personal identity, how we form said identity, and how we express this identity in the world around us. These students will be developing short scenes to answer these questions for themselves.

Let’s show Cristal some love as she embodies our #corevalue of FEARLESSNESS.

Our work is made possible by the @alabama_arts and @neaarts

Today is World Piano Day! And for our last post to Today is World Piano Day! And for our last post to celebrate Women’s History Month, we want to honor legendary jazz composer, songwriter, bandleader and pianist Lovie Austin!

Cora “Lovie” Austin was born September 19, 1887, in Chattanooga Tennessee. She would later fall in love with Chicago and make the vibrant city her home.

Her early career was in vaudeville, where she played piano and performed in variety acts. Accompanying blues singers was Lovie's specialty and can be heard on recordings by Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, Ethel Waters, and Alberta Hunter. She would be peer and inspiration to talents such as Lil Hardin Armstrong (wife of Louie Armstrong) and famed Pianist Mary Lou Williams who got her “concept” from watching Austin.

Lovie Austin’s music was groundbreaking as it laid the foundations for swing which would eventually overtake jazz as America’s obsession.

Lovie Austin was also an educator and advocate for Black artists to receive what they were due even if she couldn’t always secure the same for herself.

After Mrs. Austin passed away in 1972, Alberta Hunter would remember her as “a wonderful woman who tried to help everybody she could.”

Today we honor your tenacity and your love.

Thank you Lovie Austin!
