Educating, Entertaining, and Enriching the lives of children since 1947.

Birmingham Children’s Theatre produces between 8 and 12 professional theatrical productions for young audiences each school year. Performances are offered for school field trips to the BJCC in downtown Birmingham and as touring programs to schools and community centers throughout Alabama. Each show is accompanied by a free study guide to connect the themes of the show to classroom curriculum. Information on the show offerings for the current season can always be found on our website at www.bct123.org

BCT’s Education Department offers a variety of in-school and after school programs as well as summer camps for youth of all ages. Each semester and summer BCT offers classes and performance opportunities in our theatre, but we also have many options available for in-school learning.

Director of Education Jessie Kisor works directly with schools to develop programs to fit their calendars and budgets with offerings for single-session, multi-session, or semester-long classes in theatre arts. Class examples include (but are not limited to):

Creative Drama Play for K-3rd in which students learn the building blocks of theatre and work together to create their own play.

Creating Characters, customized for any age group, where students learn character development and acting technique through rehearsing of scenes and monologues.

Broadway Bound, customized for any age group, where students learn musical theatre techniques in acting, singing, and dancing.

Shakespeare Takes a Stand in which students age 8-18 use Shakespeare’s famous works to explore current issues they are facing today.

Alabama History in which students ages 8-18 will learn about Alabama history through devised theatre and improvisation.

BCT also offer professional development opportunities for educators in theatre arts, and all educators in integrating performing arts opportunities into the classroom learning environment.
