Bringing artists and community together

Space One Eleven believes that bringing artists and the community together has a positive impact on all involved. The arts education program unites practicing artists with youth and adults from the Birmingham area in a variety of programs to impart artistic skills, encourage creativity, and promote an understanding and appreciation of art. Serving community members of all ages with varying levels of skill, SOE is a true community resource poised to benefit everyone who has an interest in art.

City Center Art (CCA) Afterschool Art Classes and Summer Art Camps

Young artists in grades 2 through 8 learn the elements of art and principles of design through individual projects and student collaborations. Space One Eleven provides an environment in which young artists can learn, create, explore, and forge their own path into the world of art.

CCA also offers a rigorous studio art program for high school students of all skill levels. The program is designed to build visual communication skills and foster creative thinking. Students learn and strengthen foundation skills, create individual projects, and learn about art-related careers.

Summer Art Camps are a perfect way for rising 2nd through 12th grade students to learn a new art form or improve upon their art skills! These camps give young artists ample time to dive into their projects, make friends, and create works of art for the end of summer art exhibition. Rising 2nd through 5th graders paint, draw, and sculpt to create works of art influenced by artists from Alabama. Rising 6th through 12th graders select from a variety of camps in the medium of their choice. Examples include: Photography, Drawing, Architecture, and Fashion.

Through the generosity of foundations and private contributors, City Center Art and Summer Art Camp students may qualify for free or reduced tuition. Class and camp fees are based on a sliding scale.

Artist Resident Program

SOE offers art classes in Title I schools that are without visual art programs, where the classes are part of the students’ weekly curriculum throughout the school year. SOE Teaching Artists lead students in standards-based sequential art lessons and curricula, based on Alabama State Department of Education arts education standards. Teaching artists receive professional development and training in lesson planning and cultural competency.

SOE also offers specially designed curriculum for school art programs that include a field trip visit to our current exhibition.

ARTfix!

SOE offers for-fee art education classes for all ages in its ARTfix! program. Examples of classes and workshops offered are figure drawing, ceramics, painting, and art history.

Custom art classes can be designed for groups of 10 or more students.
