Awakening Dreams

Tania De’Shawn is a poet, writer, psychology enthusiast, and your favorite auntie. Her arts education programming gives students confidence and emotional intelligence that are transferrable to all areas of life. She is a first-generation college student who earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Berea College. Her work “Sister Circle” a choreopoem debuted at the 2018 Berea College Kinectic Expressions. She currently offers a free monthly artist accountability group that is focused on developing artist business plans.

Choreopoetry

Ntozake Shange created, choreopoetry, a new form of theatrical expression through the combination of poetry, music, and dance. Shange coined the term choreopoetry in 1975 to describe how the combination of verbal and nonverbal communication revolutionized poetry. This workshop will explore choreopoetry much like Ntozake Shange did with the use of self-love poetry, movement, and music. In this workshop, students will write poetry, learn different movements, and work in teams to create a group choreopoem on the topic of self-love that will be performed at the end of the session.

Body Map Storytelling

Body mapping is tracing around a person’s body to create a life-sized outline. This outline is then drawn, painted, and written to tell a story. This workshop will explore body mapping to encourage self-discovery and encourages each participant to share their own narrative. In this workshop, students will create a body map, tell a specific narrative of their choosing, and share their piece at the end of the session.
